Julie was born in the mining town of Abertillery and attended the local Grammar School, continuing her studies at Cartrefle College of Education, Wrexham.

Apart from time out to raise a family, Julie has been a highly successful primary school teacher. Her last teaching post before retiring in 2011 was at Tynewydd Primary School, Newbridge where she was the music co-ordinator, developing and extending the school choir and orchestra and making links with the community.

Before joining Risca Male Choir in 1986, Julie was accompanist for Abertillery Operatic Society, assistant accompanist for Abertillery Orpheus and Mynyddislwyn Male Voice Choirs. Julie was awarded an honorary life-membership of Risca Male Choir in recognition of 25 years as accompanist.

Julie claims that, among her interests, apart from the piano, are reading, the theatre and shopping!

Julie retired at the same time as Martin Hodson in September 2015 after almost 30 years of loyal and dedicated service to the choir. She has since become accompanist to Newbridge Ladies’ Choir and much of her spare time is taken up with spoiling her grandson Thomas.
